The Women’s Building and Beyond: Women’s rights and Women’s work at the 1893 Columbian Exposition

This presentation will give an overview of the formation of World’s Congress Auxiliary, the Politics of the Women’s Building and its Board, the Isabella Society and some of the enduring speeches given there, at the Parliament of Religions, and The Jewish Women’s congress among others. It will touch on the power struggle between factions of the suffragist and women’s rights movements and how those battles shaped the Exposition.


Debra Ann Miller is author and actress for Historical Women of Letters, through which she tours the country performing one woman shows drawn from the letters, diaries and journals of famous women such as Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott, Mary Todd Lincoln, and Beatrix Potter among others. You will recognize her as Madame Amanita Haegtessa, Steampunk Mother Goose, and from her various roles with Terra Myterium theater company, of which she is a member.
